489/689 Assignment 2:

Due by end of day on February 10
1. Read through the web pages created by your fellow students -- a link to the list of pages is now available from the course's homepage and here. Read for common interests, reasons for taking the course, etc.

Create a new web page -- linked from your existing web page -- describing these common themes with links to the common elements. Email the new URL to me by the end of February 10.

@ Reasons for taking the course

I read each student's brief statement, "Why am I in this class?" Obviously, most students take this class because they are interested in this research field." I'm also one of the students who said so.

   @ Common interests

Because each student specified a list of media individually, It was a hard work for me to find the common features among 26 web pages. In order to find the features, I defined the categories of high-level media and adapted these categories to all the lists of the students.

The categories are TV, radio, video (movie, DVD), music, WWW, E-mail, game, application S/W, instant messenger, reading (book, magazine, newspaper), and telephone.

Among 11 categories, TV is by far the best of all the other media (22/26; 22 of 26 students mentioned it)
Soonil Bae    Paul Bogen    Bradley Childs    Shane Crawford    Khoa Dang    Paul Davis    Sarah Davis    Rhonda Dunn    Mark Eaton    Tim Faltemier    Matt Fisher    Kristopher Horn    Hyo Taeg Jung    DoHyoung Kim    Reuben Marwah    Konstantinos Meintanis    Chris Okoloise    Youngjoo Park    Scott Phillips    Bridgette Summerfield    Nathanael Taylor    Ryan Villalpando

Internet media follow TV - WWW (21/26), E-mail (19/26), and instant messenger (18/26). In my opinion, this result means that many people still get information from TV media. On the other hand, some students didn't mention Internet media because these media are so common that they didn't consider to mention them. I'm also the same case (WWW).

   # WWW -   Soonil Bae    Paul Bogen    Bradley Childs    Shane Crawford    Pratik Dave    Paul Davis    Sarah Davis    Rhonda Dunn    Mark Eaton    Tim Faltemier    Matt Fisher    Kristopher Horn    Hyo Taeg Jung    Shreyas Kumar    DoHyoung Kim    Konstantinos Meintanis    Loi Nguyen    Scott Phillips    Hartanto Sasongko    Ryan Villalpando

   # E-mail -   Soonil Bae    Paul Bogen    Sarah Davis    Rhonda Dunn    Mark Eaton    Tim Faltemier    Matt Fisher    Hyo Taeg Jung    Shreyas Kumar    DoHyoung Kim    Reuben Marwah    Konstantinos Meintanis    Loi Nguyen    Chris Okoloise    Scott Phillips    Hartanto Sasongko    Bridgette Summerfield    Nathanael Taylor    Ryan Villalpando

   # Instant messenger -   Paul Bogen    Shane Crawford    Khoa Dang    Paul Davis    Sarah Davis    Rhonda Dunn    Mark Eaton    Tim Faltemier    Matt Fisher    Hyo Taeg Jung    DoHyoung Kim    Reuben Marwah    Konstantinos Meintanis    Loi Nguyen    Hartanto Sasongko    Bridgette Summerfield    Nathanael Taylor    Ryan Villalpando

Additionally, game (17/26) and telephone (17/26) are highly mentioned. I think telephone media are also very popular media that many students didn't mention them on their web pages.

   # Game -   Paul Bogen    Bradley Childs    Khoa Dang    Pratik Dave    Sarah Davis    Mark Eaton    Matt Fisher    Hyo Taeg Jung    Shreyas Kumar    DoHyoung Kim    Reuben Marwah    Konstantinos Meintanis    Loi Nguyen    Scott Phillips    Hartanto Sasongko    Bridgette Summerfield    Nathanael Taylor

   # Telephone -   Soonil Bae    Paul Bogen    Shane Crawford    Khoa Dang    Sarah Davis    Rhonda Dunn    Mark Eaton    Tim Faltemier    Matt Fisher    Shreyas Kumar    DoHyoung Kim    Reuben Marwah    Konstantinos Meintanis    Chris Okoloise    Hartanto Sasongko    Bridgette Summerfield    Nathanael Taylor    Ryan Villalpando

In the case of more specific media, many student who mentioned TV watches news and comedy(including sitcom).

   # NEWS -   [CNN]   [ABC]   [NBC]   [CBS]   [The Today Show]   [Headline News]   [FOX News]   [PBS]   [360 Degrees with Anderson Cooper]   [ABC13... Houston News coverage]   [Discovery Science]   [Local News]   [KBS(Korean Broadcasting System)]   [MBC(Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation)]   [SBS]

   # Comedy (including sitcom) -   [Daily Show]   [Chapelle's Show]   [Insomniac]   [British Comedy Shows]   [Comicview]   [That 70's Show]   [Friends]   [Seinfeld]   [Malcolm in the Middle]

For internet media, they use E-mail and instant messenger for communicating each other and many of them use more than 2 instant messengers (MSN, ICQ and Yahoo messenger etc.) and E-mail services. Students who mentioned telephone all have cell phones except one student.
